MOSQUITOES are foremost in man's war against insects. The blood sucking creatures not only cause nuisance by their irritating bites but also create health menace, as they are about responsible for spreading serious diseases like Malaria, Dengue, yellow fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Chikun Gunya etc.
Mosquitoes belong to order Diptera. There are about 3200 species of mosquitoes existing in the world out of which the following 3 species are of medical importance in india. Anopheles spp. Most important species which acts as a vector for malarial parasites (Plasmodium spp.). Active during dusk hours and are also known as midnight biters. Anopheles Culicifacies is the main vector of malaria.
Culex spp. Culicine mosquitoes are painful & persistent biters & weak fliers. These mosquitoes are very common, widespread. They breed in water with luxuriant vegetation in may fields, shallow ditches & pools. Aedes spp. Unlike Culex, Aedes mosquitoes are also painful and persistent biters. Aedes mosquitoes are strong fliers. Aedes aegypti is responsible for spreading Dengue and Chikun Gunya. Aedes mosquitoes breed in stored exposed water collection like drums, jars, pots, buckets, discarded bottles, tins, tyres etc. & a lot more places where rainwater gets collected and stored.
